about

This song is a response to the rise of modern nihilism. Inspired by the character Lance Henricksen portrayed in the television series Millennium, the concerns presented in the song are the same as those Frank Black sensed: the emptiness of the human heart and soul that is inescapable when faith in God is replaced by a void of nothingness. C. S. Lewis predicted this condition, commenting that the absence of a belief in God makes belief in anything else not only possible but unavoidable. The disastrous and tragic results for modern man are obvious...THIS IS WHO WE ARE!

lyrics

THIS IS WHO WE ARE
(Millennium)

Worry…wonder
Fear and silent screams
Lightning…and thunder
Flashing…in fading dreams

The lights are low and we just don’t know
Where we need to turn in the swirling snow
Of tears and sighs when the promise dies
And believing flies into…
“We just don’t know”

Uncaring…despairing
Haunted…by a wicked hum
Shadows…impairing
The vision of things to come

The lights are low and we just don’t know
Where we need to turn in the swirling snow
Of tears and sighs when the promise dies
And believing flies into…
“We just don’t know”

The lights are low and we just don’t know
Where we need to turn in the swirling snow
Of tears and sighs when the promise dies
And believing flies into…
“We just don’t know”

Worry…wonder
Fear and silent screams
Lightning…and thunder
Flashing…in fading dreams

The lights are low and we just don’t know
Where we need to turn in the swirling snow
Of tears and sighs when the promise dies
And believing flies into…
“We just don’t know”

The lights are low and we still don’t know
Where we need to hide from the crushing blow
When the force of war and the killing floor
Becomes a falling star…
This is who we are

The force of war and the killing floor
Becomes a falling star…
This is who we are
